This exhibition brings together a diverse array of works that defy and expand the conventional category of works on paper, demonstrating the material’s multi-use throughout art history. Before the advent of mass production, paper had socio-cultural meaning closely tied to its natural origin. It was not merely a surface. It possessed a soul, lineage, and memory.
Our exhibition looks back at this ancestral understanding of paper by featuring the work of imaginative artists who treat paper as a collaborative entity, and honor its past life. Their wondrous works search for the endless shapes that paper may take, the infinite meanings it may have, and the boundless worlds it may open. Together, they suggest that paper is, all at once, a remnant from the past, a vessel for the body, a record of memory, a channel for world-making, a partner in performance, and a refuge for the imaginary.
